Godzilla Monsters & Protectors #2

Greetings Stack Worms!  Recently, I got in the second issue of the IDW Godzilla comic. As a reminder, the format is Kenny (Cedric the mc) telling the story of him rescuing the world from Godzilla, on Me-tube via vlogging.  In this episode, the shobijin are introduced as the priestesses of Mothra. Though the writers neglect to give Mothra her proper title of Goddess and are mum that the shobijin are faeries. Kenny is a bit more annoying in this issue by being condescending at the beginning of the vlog. He mocks people for wanting to know how he knew that element 131 harmed krill. But then I guess it's because he's a kid and I gotta work remembering that. The shobijin let the audience know that Godzilla is PISSED at humanity and is taking it into serious consideration of obliterating the species. So, they decide they need to find a kid (since they represent the next generation) to help make good environmental changes to help change Godzilla's mind.  During this, we'r...

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

Greetings Stack Worms!  I loved this book! Yes, I did. I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads along w/ a short spoiler-free review. I felt like this was Memoirs of a Geisha just w/ witches and monsters.  The format of the story is told from two different timelines. The first is present-day being told by a bard reviewing the last Bone Witch, Tea. The second is the past where Tea is telling the bard her story.  The story starts off when Tea accidentally brings her deceased brother, Fox, back from the dead. She comes to find that she is a Dark asha, also known as a Bone Witch. She can raise the dead by drawing on the Dark using certain runes. She is taken to train by another Dark asha, Mykaela. At first Tea isn't happy with being taken away from her family, but slowly comes to terms that it wouldn't have been safe for her, her family, or her newly made familiar brother, Fox. In light of this, plus her need to control her magic, she tries to make the most of it.  During h...

Book haul/Reading Update

Greetings Stack Worms!  Just wanted to update you that I've finished reading The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco which I've posted a short review on Goodreads and will have a full review later today. Along with a review of the IDW comic Godzilla Monsters & Protectors # 2. Also, I got a few books and comics in:  - The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa (Fairyloot Special Editions of the first 4 books; The Iron King, The Iron Daughter, The Iron Queen, The Iron Knight) (They have painted and stenciled edges w/ their new reprint covers in hardback).  - The Space Vampires by Colin Wilson (Actually, I have 2 copies. I bought one because I thought it was the only one for sale but I hated the cover and then I found the cover I wanted for really cheap so bought it too) (Now, I have a reading copy and a collecting copy) - Mighty Morphin #7  - Power Rangers #7  - Power Rangers Unlimited - Ultraman Trials of Ultraman #3  - Godzilla Monsters & Protectors #2  ...

TBR: June Theme: PRIDE

Greetings Stack Worms!  Next month is PRIDE month so the theme for June is PRIDE reads. This means QUEER main characters and/or relationships.  This is what I plan on reading:  Amberlough by Lara Elena Donnelly  Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir In the Ravenous Dark by A.M. Strickland  Again, this list is subject to change. Especially, since I also have to read the ebook that I received from the publisher HellBoundBooks. I have started, but it's really difficult reading on a laptop in my living room, for long periods of time. I am Pansexual and my fiancee is a trans-woman. Whom I've been with for 11 years. We're in a mostly happy relationship. Of course, not everything is perfect and our mental health can get in the way sometimes, but we've put in the work so we're satisfied. We are Poly, though as of now it's just us two. So June is a pretty significant month for us and I'm excited to be doing PRIDE for a theme. And I hope y'all enjoy it as well!

Book/Writing/Reading Update

Greetings Stack Worms!  Just some updates to go over since May has been a busy (and expensive) month. And there's still a week and a half left.  I finished Burn the Dark by S.A. Hunt yesterday and started reading the Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco. Burn the Dark got 3 stars. And so far I am really enjoying The Bone Witch.  Remember me mentioning a short story that I was writing? Well, I finished it and submitted it. I got a confirmation message about the editors getting it, now I'm just waiting for that rejection letter. My girlfriend said she'll get it framed for me. Stating that it's a rite of passage for all authors. I'm just not like the nightmares I'm having. Oh, you may be wondering to what anthology I submitted to. It is a horror anthology all about classic monsters. Called Classic Monsters Unleashed.  Got some new books too:  Universal Studios Monsters #1: Dracula: Return of Evil by Larry Mike Garmon Universal Studios Monsters #3: Frankenstein: Anatomy...

Burn the Dark: Malus Domestica #1 by S.A. Hunt

Greetings Stack Worms! I finished Burn the Dark yesterday after much sleeping. I wasn't feeling great (still not) but done it is.  There's a lot going on in this book and yet, not much going on plotwise. Let's start from the beginning.  A Youtuber Robin is a witch hunter. She records her hunts and posts them on her channel known as Malus Domestica (apple tree) for revenue. These videos are indeed real, not fake like most people think they are. Her travels take her all over the states and eventually back home. Unfortunately, home has some nasty baggage attached. When she was young her mother was murdered by her possessed father. Then she was thrown into a mental clinic for a few years before she was busted out by her trainer Heinrich Hammer (I see what you did there Miss Hunt). The closer she gets to home the more she sees the aberration the Red Lord. At least it's what she considers the red lord.  When she is finally back in her hometown she reconnects to an old fr...

Monthly Book Box Subscriptions

Greetings Stack Worms!  Unboxing book boxes are extremely popular on Youtube. I really enjoy watching them myself. I'm subscribed to a few monthly "boxes" myself. I get Fairyloot, Illumicrate, Owlcrate, My Thrill Club, and Night Worms.  Fairyloot and Illumicrate are primarily UK based. They're about $45 if you get it month to month. Owlcrate is about $42 (m2m) and they're US based. These three mainly do YA books with really nice bookish items with the box. These often have exclusively designed books. They can be signed, or have fan art on the inside of the cover, different end pages, colored/stenciled edges (which as you know is the quickest way to make me buy a book), and differently colored covers.  My Thrill Club is about $19 (m2m). US based. Plus, you get more than one genre. You can pick between horror, mystery, thriller, and surprise me. Which is a mix of all three choices. Sometimes you get some candy or book marks in the book, but it's mostly just th...

True Crime Fandom? A Discussion

Greetings Stack Worms!  So, I've been seeing True Crime around more. Is there a fandom for True Crime books? I wonder what drove the spike in popularity. Or was it always around and I had never noticed it? This may be sounding a bit snide, but I'm legit curious.  What books would you suggest for me? Is there any Paranormal True Crime?  I'm not much for serial killers unless they are unknown. I do like forensics. But I'm a big fan of poisons. If you know any famous poisoners I'm interested. Are there like any serial killers that have used venomous snakes for their murders?  What are your favorites books? Or genres of True Crime?

Bookish/Writing Updates

Greetings Stack Worms!  I know it has been a little bit since I've posted or even updated on Goodreads, but lately, I've been a little obsessed with watching Subnautica Playthroughs and a color-by-number game app. Sorry. However, it's only the middle of May I still have time.  I did get to 2,000 words in my short story that I'm writing. The limit is 5,000. Since there isn't a lot of room in the anthology and a lot of people submitting, I don't think it'll be picked, but I promised myself if I survived my Upper GI that I'd finally do some submissions.  I did get some new books in!  - The Monster Club by R. Chetwynd-Hayes  - The Elementals by Michael McDowell  - Blackwater: The Complete Saga by Michael McDowell  - Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter by David Dastmalchian (graphic novel)  - The Ones We're Meant to Find by Joan He Did y'all hear what happened last weekend with Amazon? Apparently, Amazon Kindle decided that it was g...

Hunt This read will take a li...

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

Greetings Stack Worms! It's the revenge of the 5th! I finished A Deadly Education yesterday (May 4th). I read the entire day to get it finished and if you're here from Goodreads you'll know that I gave the book 5 stars. Though I must admit that I really hate/fear 5s. Let's move on to the summary and review.  Galadriel Higgins is a very hated (feared?) wizard. Which has isolated her from the rest of the Scholomance community. Though she was used to that after having spent most of her life in a commune that treated her much the same way. Now a Junior at the Scholomance she has big plans to join an enclave. Getting into an enclave will help with mana use. But it isn't easy to do. Especially, if Orion Lake doesn't stop saving her life and making her look weak. As El gets closer with Orion and his friendship brings with it new friendships she realizes she doesn't want an enclave. She wants friendship and despite her fiery temper, she has managed to form an alli...

Reading/Bookish Update

Greetings Stack Worms!  Yesterday, was a pretty awesome day. It was May 1st which happens to be Beltane. So, Blessed Beltane everyone!  Also, I got the My Thrill Box in. I really like this box. It's not really expensive under $20 and you get 2 hardcovers. Plus, there are three different genres to choose from; Thrillers, Mystery, Horror, and Surprise Me. The surprise me will comprise of a mix of the three and I believe an ebook as well. This month I got The Pandora Room by Christopher Golden and We are where the Nightmares Go and Other Stories by C. Robert Cargill. Both are hardback and look like first editions.  Then I got John Dies at the End by David Wong w/ a coupon from Barnes and Noble. The new updated special edition. Paperback. And I have a few more horror books coming in this week. I'll update you when I get them.  I started A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik I got about 18% in. I'm really liking it so far. I'm crossing my fingers that it will continue...

Godzilla: Monster Protectors: Rise Up Part 1

Greetings Stack Worms!  I recently got the first issue in the newest Godzilla comic. The comic is published monthly by IDW. There is a monthly subscription cover and one variant cover. I got both. And I've already preordered one of each cover for the next three months.  Now this series of comics is supposed to be more for the younger fans of Godzilla. Which is really fantastic trying to bring in new blood to the fandom.  But oh my goodness are these protagonists obnoxious! This story is told from the perspective of a Kenny! AAAAARGH! If you don't understand the "Kenny" reference go watch Brandon Tenold's reviews. He's hilarious.  Anyway, let me get into the story first, then I'll go into likes and dislikes.  We open up to a Junior High boy introducing us as the kid that saved the world and his name is Cedric Nishimura (it took me three times reading the comic to remember that name). He starts in on how the Linival Corporation has created a cleaner source...
