Godzilla: Monster Protectors: Rise Up Part 1

Greetings Stack Worms!

I recently got the first issue in the newest Godzilla comic. The comic is published monthly by IDW. There is a monthly subscription cover and one variant cover. I got both. And I've already preordered one of each cover for the next three months.

Now this series of comics is supposed to be more for the younger fans of Godzilla. Which is really fantastic trying to bring in new blood to the fandom.

But oh my goodness are these protagonists obnoxious! This story is told from the perspective of a Kenny! AAAAARGH! If you don't understand the "Kenny" reference go watch Brandon Tenold's reviews. He's hilarious.

Anyway, let me get into the story first, then I'll go into likes and dislikes.

We open up to a Junior High boy introducing us as the kid that saved the world and his name is Cedric Nishimura (it took me three times reading the comic to remember that name). He starts in on how the Linival Corporation has created a cleaner source of energy called Element 131 said to have a negligible effect on the environment. However, that negligible effect is primarily focused on krill. And without the krill then the whole ocean ecosystem is thrown into wack. When the balance of the ocean is off then so is the entire world. This wakes Godzilla up from his many unspecified years of hibernation, to destroy this fake Island with the Linival Power Plant housed on it.

Then Cedric and his friends Emily and Anderson are discussing why Godzilla is attacking Earth again. Cedric's father suggests aliens. Anderson says it can't be aliens because they don't exist but he and Emily say it's probably the lizard people. Which Cedric silently criticizes his friends. These three great friends. No really. I'm not being sarcastic. Emily and Anderson are arrogant know-it-alls. And Cedric thinks he's like the next super genius. Brags about winning the 4th grade science fair and being able to say Archeopteryx in kindergarten. Not as impressive as he thinks.

The story ends with a tease of The Shobijin! HUZZAH!!! I'm so looking forward to seeing Mothra.

So that was the plot of the first issue. Not bad for a beginning. It's told from the framework of Cedric streaming himself on MEETOOB (ick). I hate it when media has to make up fake media to cover the real platforms. Of course, this is all after the fact of him having SAVED THE WORLD FROM GODZILLA! Oh, Gods he really is a Kenny.

Likes:

- The art is pretty good

- Godzilla has a decent design

- The tease of the Shobijin

Dislikes:

- The completely obnoxious characters

- The weak explanation of the science

- Telling not showing our characters strengths and weaknesses

I do look forward to the rest of the story. Plus, I'm a completionist when it comes to Godzilla. I don't know how long this comic series plans on running, but IDW has said that there should be more series coming. I mean others besides the Monster Protectors title.

I will review them as I read them. Which I hope you enjoy and I hope I won't be as negative on the other issues.

I'd give this issue 2 Automic breaths out of 4.
