Summary Time! I know we all hate this part right? I can imagine that some don't want the book spoiled for them but my summaries are way worse when I'm trying to be vague so spoiler filled it is.
Kai and Kishi are identical twins during a time when...this wasn't seen as a good thing. So, the two face discrimination not just as twins but as females that work. They don't really let this bother them since they have each other. However, growing up is never easy and sometimes can create a rift between sisters. A big way is by one of them dying. Kishi is swallowed up by a ghost whale during one of their pearl hunts. Kai knows she has to go after her and find away to bring her back.
Unfortunately, by the time Kai finds her sister, it's too late. Kishi's soul has left her body. To get Kishi's soul back she makes a deal with the Dragon King and Benzaiten to get Dakini's pearl. Dakini is the goddess of foxes, she worries that she might be possessed by a fox on this journey.
Kai has until the full moon to get the jewel from Dakini. This means she must hurry, The Dragon King advises Kai of a feathered cloak that will help her fly. Once she has the cloak Kai flies to the Silent Mountains where Sky Mountain is. Only to be shot down by a bandit boy named Ren.
Kai tells the other two bandits with him that she's a tennyo and should sell her instead of kill her. They listen to her and take her to General Takagi where she tells him about her adventure hoping he'd help her instead of paying the bandits.
Which he does. He even takes her in as a guest. However, he has a devious plan in mind. He wants to marry his son off to Kai. Ren helps her escape from the General's compound to Sky Mountian.
Where Kai challenges Dakini to a hunt. This makes Dakini produce her pearl. They play a game called Fox Fist and Kai wins after a long arduous battle. As they escape from the foxes den, the General captures Kai. Ren shoots the General in the eye killing him instantly, freeing Kai. In dropping his guard to save Kai he's then possessed by a fox. Ren wants Kai to shoot him, not wanting to be possessed for the rest of his life. Kai can't do it though.
She escapes Sky Mountain and heads home. Where the Dragon King waits for her and the pearl. He takes her to his castle and calls a meeting with Benzaiten. Kai gives the goddess Dakini's pearl and as bargained for Kishi's soul is returned to Kai. The twins go home together and the time has gone backward as if Kai's journey had never happened. Except, she still has the scar from being shot down.
LIKES:
- The relationship between Kai and Ren, things seemed a little fast, but it makes sense
- It was nice to see into a world of a pearl diver
- The stories and myths were awesome to explore
- the gifts from the gods were awesome. My favorite was the bowl that could produce any food you'd want to eat.
DISLIKES:
- The long chapters. Shorter chapters make reading much faster for me. I'd take more chapters over long chapters.
- There just wasn't a uniqueness to the story
My thoughts about The Pearl Hunter was that I enjoyed the book. I'd buy it. I just wish there had been something more unique that I could say about the book. Now, I know my expectations shouldn't color my review, and I don't think it has, but I was hoping for a little more of a magical feel. That doesn't mean there isn't magic in here, I just didn't feel it while reading. Sorry, if that doesn't make sense.
I did get this ebook from Netgalley and the publisher.
That's all for now. I know this isn't a very satisfying review. Sorry.
Toodles!
