MEG: The Graphic Novel by J.S. Earls

Greetings Stack Worms!!

First and foremost this graphic novel is an adaptation of the book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten. I know in the title I said by J.S. Earls and that's because he's the one that adapted the story to a comic script. I wasn't going to put all of that in the heading. The illustrator is Mike S. Miller.

I kind of have a strained relationship with this graphic novel. I had this preordered back in 2019, however, my preorder was canceled and I couldn't find it anywhere. Until, about late last year, when I found it on Amazon...and NOWHERE ELSE! I have no idea what happened. I couldn't find a reason why. The same thing happened to another graphic novel I wanted and I could only find it in one place as a used copy.

I wish I could find articles on why this happens and then I find it used. If it was the company going out of business then I don't think the books would be printed at all, so what gives?

Anyway, on to the review. I gave the graphic novel 3 stars and the book 4 stars. I'll get into why.

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON!

This goes basically as the book does, just condensed. Jonas Taylor a sub-diver comes in contact with a Megalodon while in the Challenger Deep. Being as exhausted as he was, he did what he thought was best to save the scientists on the sub and himself. This didn't turn out for him, the scientists die and JT is condemned as a nutcase. So, he retires, gets his degree in prehistoric fish. A few years later his wife doesn't like him anymore and decides to piss him off so he'd attack her lover. This way she can claim he went insane and get away with divorcing him. Which doesn't happen in time. JT is called on by a friend of his Masao Tanaka to help retrieve something of his from the challenger deep. He does agree after some hem-hawing. To the much chagrin of Tanaka's daughter Terry. She tries to sabotage Jonas on his way down into the Marian trench but is thwarted by another friend of JT's, Mac (who was the best character in the book in my opinion).

Jonas is in the deep with Tanaka's son, DJ, who is killed by the male Megalodon. Only to have the female meg start to eat him and use his warm blood to swim through the cold waters. Jonas goes back to the Masao lagoon and tells them what happened. Now it's a race against time to catch the female meg before she kills and gives birth to her pups. Unfortunately, the meg is able to give birth and kill Jonas's wife in the process. Eventually, Jonas lets himself be swallowed in a sub and then stabs the meg's heart, killing her. Then Masao is able to get capture the newborn pup Angel in his lagoon. Terry and Jonas fall in love and bam. End of Meg.

LIKES:

- Mac and Masao

- It was basically MEG just shortened. Which makes sense.

DISLIKES:

- The art was wonky at parts. At times I swear there were just straight-up TROLL faces on characters.

- Not enough gore. Why are people so afraid to gives us an R rating? Seriously? WTF?

- Most everyone is Assholes. Which was basically just like in the book, but I had more fun reading the book. Mac got more laughs.

I really would have given it 2.5 stars, but I round up on Goodreads. Since there are no decimals. Which irritates me. Anyway, it was an okay read. Quick. It's been a while since I read the book and out of all the media of the MEG that I've consumed...I actually prefer the movie. Fewer assholes. But Mac didn't get many good lines, which made me sad.

Review for The Deep a little later. Toodles!
